In this blog post I am going to talk about an interesting use case on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluemap.co\/palo-alto-network-security-training\/\">Palo Alto Firewall<\/a> for redundant internet access using Policy based forwarding with two Virtual Routers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start with, let me explain you the use case we are trying to implement in this article. The following diagram shows that our <strong>Palo Alto firewall<\/strong> has two internet connections &#8211; primary internet connection on interface eth1\/1 and secondary internet connection on interface eth1\/4. Interfaces eth1\/3 is connected to an internal host [in our case it is a Cisco router] which will be sourcing traffic to the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"468\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image.png\" alt=\"Cisco router\" class=\"wp-image-293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image.png 468w, https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-360x223.png 360w, https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-250x155.png 250w, https:\/\/bluemap.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-100x62.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The following steps explain the configuration starting from interface level configuration to implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.paloaltonetworks.com\/pan-os\/8-1\/pan-os-admin\/policy\/policy-based-forwarding\">Policy Based Routing<\/a> and then verifying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are using static IP addresses in our entire topology. One static route is for internet access i.e. the default route and one static route to reach the internal network for which the next hop is the other virtual router [Secondary-Router]. The other virtual router for secondary connection which houses the interfaces eth1\/3 and eth1\/4.
